The name of drowning victim has been released

Yesterday the body of a man was recovered in a large pond in Newton County. Newton County Sheriff Robert Burby has released the name of the victim now that family has been notified.

On September 25, 2024, searchers recovered the body of a man investigators believe drowned in Newton County.  At approximately 5:15 p.m., searchers recovered the victim in a large pond behind Scrappin Valley Lodge off Highway 87 north of Burkeville.  

The victim is identified as Decorian Shaquil Smith, 31 YOA, from Call, Texas.  Decorian Smith was boating prior to being reported missing in the water at about 5 p.m. Tuesday the 24th. First responders searched the pond until dark and resumed the next morning on Wednesday. Newton County Sheriff’s Office was assisted in the search by Texas Parks and Wildlife Game Wardens, Beauregard Parish Sheriff's Office, and local volunteers from Burkeville VFD, Toledo Bend VFD, and the Blue Line Advocates (BLA).
