The Earth will soon have two moons? Well, yes...sort of.
From September 29th through November 25th of this year, an object known as Astroid 2024 PT5 will attach itself to Earths orbit alongside our satellite/moon. Some sources are saying that this second moon will be easily visible from the Earth, while others are saying it will only be visible using a high powered telescope. What we do know, is that visible or not, we will have a second natural satellite for a short time.
According to NASA, our moon has accompanied the Earth for around 4 billion years. Asteroid 2024 PT5 will only stick around for two months before it heads back to its home in an asteroid belt trailing our planet and orbiting the sun.
According to Space.com research lead author and Universidad Complutense de Madrid professor Carlos de la Fuente Marcos said, "The object that is going to pay us a visit belongs to the Arjuna asteroid belt, a secondary asteroid belt made of space rocks that follow orbits very similar to that of Earth at an average distance to the sun of about 93 million miles (150 million kilometers). Objects in the Arjuna asteroid belt are part of the near-Earth object population of asteroids and comets."
So, we may be able to see it, and we may not be able to see it, who knows...But what is certain at this point is that 2024 still has some crazy tricks up her sleeve! Keep your eyes open, at this point anything can happen.
