Texas Historic Powell Hotel preparing as Welcome Center during Newton Homecoming 2024

The Historic Powell Hotel Welcomes You for Newton's 2024 Homecoming Festivities!

The Texas Historic Powell Hotel in Newton, Texas, invites you to join in the 2024 Homecoming festivities on September 28, 2024! As part of the celebration, the hotel will serve as a welcome center, offering refreshments, air conditioning, and a silent auction featuring amazing cakes.

Since 1909, the Powell Hotel has stood proudly on the east side of the Newton County Courthouse square. More than just a place for travelers, it has been a cozy haven for weary visitors and a cherished home for residents. Imagine the creak of wooden floors, the aroma of freshly brewed coffee, and the friendly conversations that once filled its halls. Today, walking through the meticulously restored hotel feels like stepping back in time—a delightful blend of nostalgia and history.

Helen Powell had a vision for this historic building. In 1999, she and her heirs donated the Powell Hotel, formerly known as the W.H. Ford Male and Female College, to the Newton County Historical Commission. They entrusted this piece of living history to the commission as its guardians. Under the leadership of Mark Karpel, the restoration project began, with Mrs. Hogan playing a vital role in ensuring that the hotel’s essence remained intact for future generations.

Mrs. Hogan continues to maintain the Powell Hotel by organizing volunteers to clean, restore, and donate historical items for display. During the cooler months, she leads the popular "Soup Service Days," which run from the first Tuesday in November to the last Tuesday in February.
