Newton County Sheriff Colton Havard has released a statement regarding the officer involved shooting that happened Friday evening. This is the release in its entirety;
On Friday, February 21, 2025, at 4:09 p.m., the Newton County Sheriff's Office, was dispatched to a residence in the 9000 block of FM 2626, in reference to a domestic disturbance. Deputies had prior knowledge that the suspect had a felony warrant for his arrest out of Kansas for aggravated assault.
As the deputy arrived on scene, the white male suspect fled into the woods and was armed with a handgun. While the deputy was searching for the suspect, he was informed the suspect was hiding in a toolbox in the rear of a Chevrolet Silverado and had possibly left the scene. The deputy located the vehicle traveling west on US 190.
The Newton County Sheriff's Deputy, along with the Newton Police Department conducted a traffic stop on the Chevrolet Silverado on US 190 near County Road 4002 and upon making contact, the suspect came out of the toolbox and pointed a firearm at the officers, at which point the suspect was shot and killed.
The Texas Department of Public Safety, Texas Ranger Division was called to the scene to assist in this investigation. This is an active and ongoing investigation, and no further information is available.
