Newton County Texas Revitalization Group met this evening at the Newton History Center, Tuesday August 29, 2023.
Discussion topics covered the following:
“Touch A Truck” event on August 5, 2023 which was an incredible event in which children and adults enjoyed. We decided that this will be an annual collaborative event between Newton Volunteer Fire Department and NRG.
Historical Preservation initiatives to preserve the historical WPA viaduct system throughout downtown Newton. The City of Newton field crew started the clean up work and it looks great. Once this effort is complete, Newton’s Historical Clerk, Terri Woods will submit to the Texas Historical Commission to be added to the Texas Historical Site listing.
NRG’s next clean up days are planned for the Powell Hotel on September 8th and 9th, Friday and Saturday during Trade Days at the Old Feed Store starting at 9AM. There is much to do in preparation for Newton’s Homecoming so please make every effort to help clean up the interior of the Historical Powell Hotel. Many hands make lite work.
NRG members are working towards cleaning the windows of the Barrow Building, power washing courthouse sidewalks, adjacent sidewalks and spraying the weeds to retard growth before Newton’s Homecoming festivities. Homecoming is October 20, 2023 in downtown Newton. NRG will have a booth selling T-shirts and representing revitalization efforts.
Newton’s Christmas Festival and parade is planned for December 2, 2023. The Newton Volunteer Fire Department and NRG will partner for this event. Volunteers are needed for a live nativity scene, choirs for the gazebo and we need food trucks.
The mural project is ongoing and will resume once the weather cools down. If you own a building in Newton and are open to having a mural painted on it, please contact NRG on our FB page.
We will post the next meeting date, time and location early September. Please make every effort to attend as we do have things for you to do! We want everyone to engage, participate and support these efforts for the future of this wonderful town.
