Newton Volunteer Fire Department has returned from their disaster relief trip to North Carolina. Below is a public release regarding their trip and some images that are both encouraging and disturbing showing the damage that area suffered from Hurricane Helena.
Newton VFD Representative;
We would like to express our heartfelt appreciation to everyone who contributed to this flood relief initiative.
Our destination was a small town 17 miles east of Asheville. Despite extensive news coverage of Asheville, other areas received inadequate attention. This location functions as a central hub for multiple smaller distribution centers.
For some, this trip was emotional, evoking memories of the 2016 floods. Honestly, tears were shed. Witnessing people residing in tents and cars alongside a toxic river is profoundly disturbing.
Notably, FEMA's efforts are more praised than commonly acknowledged on social media; they're providing substantial assistance but donations from communities like ours are still very vital for these individuals. They are still a long way from recovering.
Again we would like to say thank you from us and the gracious people of North Carolina. God bless you!
