Newton First Assembly of God Church destroyed by fire today


Newton, TX The Newton First Assembly of God Church located on Loop 505 South, burned to the ground Saturday.


Newton Volunteer Fire Captain Melanie Smith said, "The fire was already through the roof when we arrived. The cause is under investigation, but it is thought to be electrical."

The building was a complete loss.


Newton VFD was called out at 5:45 pm, but soon other units were called out to assist.

Mutual aid was received from Burkeville Fire Department, East End Fire Department, Trout Creek Fire Department and Bon Weir Fire Department. Burkeville First Responder's, City of Newton, Newton Police Department, and Newton Sheriff's Office were also on scene.


One firefighter was overcome by heat and was transported to Jasper Memorial Hospital via Allegiance Ambulance Service.


In total, 30 firemen and 12 units responded.


Newton VFD wants to thank everyone for responding.
