Calls To Service (April 22, 2024, to April 28, 2024): The Newton County Sheriff’s Office (NCSO) answered 60 calls to service.
Training: During the month of April 2024, Newton County Sheriff's Office hosted two training classes: Rabies & LRCA Course, and De-Escalation Training. We would like to thank DETCOG and Instructor J.B. Smith with the Lufkin Police Department for providing mandated TCOLE training (De-Escalation) here in Newton on April 26, 2024. We also want to thank Newton ISD for allowing us to have the class at Eagle's Landing. It was a great class, and we look forward to future collaborations for Continuing Education for our Deputies and Dispatch/Jail crew.
UPDATE; FROM APRIL 8, 2024: Corey McCarver, W/M, 26 YOA, has been charged with an additional charge regarding his crime that was initially received as Burglary of a Vehicle Call on Wednesday, March 27, 2024. The registered owner of the vehicle provided us with a statement that led to the additional charge. McCarver’s bond amount for this (Burglary of Vehicles- MA) charge was set at $2,500. McCarver is still in custody.
ORGINAL PRESS RELEASE: On Wednesday, March 27, 2024, we responded to a Burglary of Vehicle in the vicinity of Big Cow Creek Bridge on Hwy 87 South. The victims advised that the suspect fled into the nearby wooded. A search was conducted with Blood Hounds who responded from Vernon Parish Sheriff’s Office to assist. A track of the area was conducted with negative results.
After the suspect’s description was released, we received information from the public that led to the identity and location of the suspect. We located the suspect on CR 4001 and interviewed him regarding this incident. We later obtained an Arrest Warrant for the suspect who is identified as Corey McCarver, W/M, 26 YOA from Louisiana. He was arrested on April 4, 2024, on CR 4001 in Newton, and charged with the following charges:
2 Counts of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon (F-2) Total Bond is $100,000.00
This is still an active investigation that will certainly result in additional charges. We want to extend our appreciation to the citizens who saw something and said something. A huge thanks to Vernon Parish Sheriff’s Office who responded and brought Blood Hounds and a Drone with a support team.
Jail Transports: NCSO had 2 jail transports;
1 from NCSO to Jasper for court, 1 from NCSO to Dr. Appointment.
Jail Population: We currently have 25 inmates in the following jails;
11 housed in Newton, 5 housed in Beauregard, and 8 housed in Jasper, 1 at mental facility on furlough.
