Update: Burglary of a Vehicle Call on Wednesday, March 27, 2024: On Wednesday, March 27, 2024, we responded to a Burglary of Vehicle in the vicinity of Big Cow Creek Bridge on Hwy 87 South. The victims advised that the suspect fled into the nearby wooded. A search was conducted with Blood Hounds who responded from Vernon Parish Sheriff’s Office to assist. A track of the area was conducted with negative results.
After the suspect’s description was released, we received information from the public that led to the identity and location of the suspect. We located the suspect on CR 4001 and interviewed him regarding this incident. We later obtained an Arrest Warrant for the suspect who is identified as Corey McCarver, W/M, 26 YOA from Louisiana. He was arrested on April 4, 2024, on CR 4001 in Newton, and charged with the following charges: 2 Counts of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon (F-2) Total Bond is $100,000.00. He is still in custody at the Newton County Jail.
This is still an active investigation that will certainly result in additional charges. We want to extend our appreciation to the citizens who saw something and said something. A huge thanks to Vernon Parish Sheriff’s Office who responded and brought Blood Hounds and a Drone with a support team.
Calls To Service (April 1, 2024, to April 7, 2024): The Newton County Sheriff’s Office (NCSO) answered 80 calls to service.
Jail Transports: NCSO had 3 jail transports;
1 from Orange Co to NCSO, 1 from NCSO to Jefferson Co, 1 from NCSO to Dr. Appointment.
Jail Population: We currently have 25 inmates in the following jails;
14 housed in Newton, 6 housed in Beauregard, and 5 housed in Jasper.
