In a public release, Newton County Judge Ronnie Cochran explained the large tax increase;
Today, during our Commissioners Court meeting, an important and difficult decision was made for the upcoming fiscal year proposing a tax rate of $0.700926 per $100 (please see table). We fully understand that this is a significant and controversial decision.
From last years no-new revenue rate until this year the county has incurred increases of $100,000 for health insurance, $160,00 for the cost of housing inmates, $80,000 increase in the Appraisal District budget and these are just some of the cost increases we have seen for the 2025 fiscal year. The extra revenue collected will be approximately $500,000 which will help offset some of the increase in cost with out cutting valuable services.
As we all know, the recent rise in inflation is a challenge we are all feeling, and Newton County government is no exception. Just as households and businesses are facing increased costs for goods and services, so too is our county. Everything from fuel to equipment, building materials, and general operations has become more expensive, placing additional strain on our budget.
Please know that this decision was not made lightly. The Commissioners Court is committed to being responsible stewards of the resources entrusted to us. We will continue to do everything in our power to control costs, reduce unnecessary spending, and ensure that taxpayer money is used wisely and efficiently. Our primary focus remains on keeping our county running smoothly while ensuring the well-being and safety of every resident.
We are grateful for the trust you place in us, and we are dedicated to using these funds in a manner that best serves the entire community. It is our responsibility to ensure that Newton County continues to thrive while upholding our programs and services.
This decision was made with careful consideration of each and every citizen of Newton County, and we appreciate your understanding as we navigate these challenges together.
Rest assured, we remain committed to careful financial stewardship. Our priority is to continue providing necessary services while making prudent decisions about spending. We will do everything possible to manage resources effectively, control costs, and ensure that taxpayer dollars are used wisely. We vow to seek new ways to cut spending and maintain high-level efficiency not only now, at budget time, but continuously throughout the year, visiting with department heads and eliminating any unnecessary costs to the taxpayers.
Sincerely,
Ronald J. Cochran
Newton County Judge
