On Wednesday evening at approximately 10:45 p.m., deputies with the Newton County Sheriff’s Office were conducting proactive criminal enforcement in the area of County Road 4101.
While patrolling the area, deputies made contact with James Ryan Smith, who was walking down the road. While speaking with Smith, deputies grew suspicious and believed him to be involved in criminal activity. A search of Smith revealed that he was in possession of methamphetamine. Smith was placed under arrest after a brief struggle with the deputies.
While deputies were on the scene investigating this incident, Smith’s girlfriend, Angel Sutton, arrived highly intoxicated and was subsequently arrested for public intoxication. Both subjects were transported to the Newton County Jail.
James Ryan Smith is charged with possession of a controlled substance and resisting arrest, search, or transport. Angel Sutton is charged with public intoxication.
