West Palm Beach Sheriff Ric Bradshaw shows photo of backpack, rifle, and gear left behind by would be assassin
Former President Trump was the subject of an assassination attempt earlier Sunday at his golf club in West Palm Beach, Florida. This latest attempt on his life is just nine weeks after he was shot by a would be assassin at a campaign event in Butler, Pennsylvania.
In a statement, Trump said that he is safe and well, and that authorities have a man in custody.
In a press conference, West Palm Beach Sheriff Ric Bradshaw said that U.S. Secret Service agents were stationed a few holes up from where Trump was playing when one of them noticed the muzzle of an AK-style rifle sticking through the shrubbery that lines the course, roughly 400 yards away.
One of the Secret Service agents fired at the suspect who dropped the rifle and fled in an SUV. In the process, the gunman left the firearm, two backpacks, a scope, and a GoPro behind as he ran.
The suspect was later stopped by police in an adjacent county. Martin County Sheriff William Snyder said that the suspect had a "calm, flat demeanor and showed little emotion when he was stopped and didn't ask why he was being pulled over."
58-year-old Ryan Wesley Routh was identified by federal officials as the suspect.
Obviously, this is a developing story. We will update our readers as more information is made available.
